How To Install A New GBA SP Case

Items Needed: Fine tipped Phillips screwdriver, Triwing screwdriver, pointed object (pick, small knife etc.) pliers (optional).

PLEASE NOTE: If you buy a replacement GBA SP shell from anywhere else besides Gaming Generations, you may not receive all of the parts and therefore some of the steps may not be possible to do in our guide.

Get all of your necessary tools together.

1) Grab your new GBA SP shell.

2) We will be changing this nasty case today. If you think it looks bad now, you should have seen it before I photoshopped it to make it look better :-)

3) Take out the screw and remove the battery cover.

4) Remove the battery.

5) Take out the 6 triwing screws.

View Original

6) pull the bottom cover from the top like shown below. Try your best to keep the R & L buttons in place.

7) Take out the 3 screws holding down the motherboard.

8) Gently pull the board up.

View Original

9) Push the latch downward and remove the ribbon cable. This cable connects the top screen to the motherboard.

10) Remove the buttons.

11) Remove the speaker.

12) Take out the screw shown below.

13) After taking out the screw above you will be able to remove the piece shown below.

14) Using your knife take off the 5 pads.

15) Take out the 5 screws. Newer bright screen GBA SP systems will have regular philips screws whereas older version GBA SP systems will have triwing screws.

16) Remove the top.

17) Pull out the top screen. Be careful not to rip the ribbon cable when pulling it out.

18) Now on to the hardest part, taking out the 2 hinges. These babies are in there super tight.

19) Push hard on each one and they will eventually pop out. Be careful not to hurt yourself. I have found that using your pliers works best to push these out.

20) Let's take a break from the hinges quick. We will work with the screen.

21) Gently pull off the screen cover.

View Original

22) Pull off the adhesive on the new screen cover you will be installing.

23) Put the new screen cover on. Make sure it is lined up correctly.

24) Pull off the front adhesive on the new screen.

View Original

25) Now back to the 2 hinges. Remove the nubs on both hinges.

26) Put on the new nubs.

27) Both are on in the picture below.

28) Onto the 2nd hardest part, getting the hinges back in place. Push these hinges back in REALLY hard and they should snap in place. I've had to get a hammer out before to get these back in place, fun fun.

29) The hinges should now be back in place.

30) Place the top screen back in place and route the ribbon cable back through the hole shown in the picture below.

31) Place the top piece back on.

32) Put the 5 screws back in.

33) Alright, their back in good job.

34) Put the piece shown below back on.

35) Screw down the piece you just put back in the above step.

36) Place your buttons back in place and the speaker.

37) Plug back in the top screen ribbon cable to the motherboard. Make sure to secure it in w/ the tab.

38) Put the 3 screws back in place.

39) Grab this piece.

40) Put the piece above as shown in the picture below.

41) Put the top and bottom case together. PLEASE NOTE: Make sure that the on/off button lines up correctly together on the top and bottom case. Also make sure to try and keep the R & L buttons in place.

42) Put the 6 triwing screws back in place.

43) Place the battery back in place.

View Original

44) Place the battery cover back on and screw it down.

45) Put the 5 tabs back in.

46) Put the "Nintendo" symbol on.

47) Your GBA SP should now be ready to go.

There you have it, we have just completely changed a GBA SP shell.

Troubleshooting Guide

Problem: My screen flickers on and then off when turning on the system.
Solution: Your ribbon cable from the top screen is most likely not plugged in all the way to the board. Also be sure your battery is charged.
