How To Replace The Bottom Screen Nintendo DS (Original)

Items Needed: Fine tipped Phillips screwdriver, Triwing screwdriver, pointed object (pick, small knife etc.) pliers (optional).

Get all of your necessary tools together.

1) First you need to take out the screw holding down the battery cover.

2) Take out the battery and then the 7 triwing screws indicated by the red dots.

3) Gently pull up the cover.

4) Next we will take out the L & R buttons.

5) Pull up and back at the same time and the L & R buttons will come right now. Be careful not to lose the small springs.

6) Do not lose any of these parts!

7) Take out the 4 silver color screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

8) Gently pull up the tab and unplug the ribbon cable. Be very careful with these tabs when pulling up, they are not very durable. If one breaks it is not very fun to make the cables stay in place.

9) Gently pull up and unplug the black wire (WIFI wire).

10) Gently pull up the tab and unplug the bottom screen ribbon cable.

11) Underneath this ribbon cable there are 2 more ribbon cables. These tabs pull out, not up. Slide the 2 ribbon cables out.

12)Make sure all 3 cables are disconnected.

13) Make sure both 2 cables are disconnected..

14) Pull up the motherboard & set aside.

15) Pull back the black adhesive.

16) Gently pull up on the ribbon cable so it comes unattached from the adhesive.

17) Gently pull up the bottom screen & set aside.

18) We are half way done!

19)Place the bottom screen back in.

20) Route the ribbon cable on top of the bottom screen like shown below.

21) Everything should look like below.

22) Put the motherboard back in. Notice that you need to route the 3 ribbon cables from the bottom screen back through the motherboard like shown.

23) Put the 2 small ribbon cables in first. Remember to push the tabs back in so the ribbon cables stay nice and snug.

24) Make sure the tab is up and push back in the big ribbon cable. Push the tab back down once the cable is nice and snug.

25) Push in the upper ribbon cable. Again make sure the tab is up before inserting. Make sure you have this cable in 100% as well before you put the tab back down.

26) Put your 3 silver Phillips screws back in.

27) Put in your last Phillips screw above.

28) Route the black wire like shown below. Use your small tipped screwdriver and gently push it down so it stays nice and snug. Leaving the wire exposed may cause issues when you put the bottom shell back on. If you are unsure how to do it scroll down and check out a few of the finished pictures.

29) Gently plug the black wire back in.

30) This is what you should be looking at.

31) Put the R & L buttons back in place. Make sure you put the springs back on.

32) It's ready to get closed up, make sure everything is set in place.

36) Put the battery cover back and screw it down.

Troubleshooting Guide
Problem: I am having problems routing my ribbon from the upper case to the bottom case.
Solution: There is a small slit in the bottom case that allows you the push the ribbon cable through. Just take your time and you will get it. Just be sure not to pull to hard as you may rip the ribbon cable.

Problem: My ribbon cable that runs from the top screen to the bottom ripped, what can I do about this?
Solution: You will need to get a new ribbon cable.
Problem: I am not getting any picture on the screens after installing the new case.
Solution: Make sure you have installed everything correctly.
Problem: My DS turns on and then turns off after a couple seconds.
Solution: Your top screen ribbon cable is most likely not plugged in snugly enough to the motherboard. If that does not fix the problem change top screens. If that still does not work then you will need a new motherboard.
Problem: My DS top screen turns on but only shows a white screen.
Solution: Again check your top screen ribbon cable. If that is not the problem, you may have a bad top screen. If that is not the problem it is most likely an issue with your motherboard.
Problem: My DS bottom screen turns on but only shows a white screen.
Solution: Make sure all of the ribbon cables are nice and snug to the motherboard.
Problem: My DS touch screen does not work anymore.
Solution: This is a very common problem. All you need to do is make sure the touch screen ribbon cable plugged in 100%. |
