How To Install A New PS3 Laser w/ Mech

If your Ps3 is struggling to read discs and you have tried cleaning the lens, then you may want to consider changing out the entire mech. Although we will be installing a KES-400A laser, this guide will work for all PS3 laser models, including KES-400ACA.
1) Get your PS3 ready to go.

2) In this guide we will be disassembling an older 80GB ps3. The newer 40GB, 80GB & 160GB consoles are slightly different when it comes to disassembling. The differences will be described during this guide. An easy way to tell if you have an older version PS3 is check if there is a flap like shown in the picture below. All 60GB & older 80GB consoles have this flap.

3) Pull off the warranty seal.

4) Pull out the rubber tab.

5) Now on to the most annoying part. Do your best to take out the screw inside. Using the right tool LOCATED HERE will save you the headache.

6) Once the screw is removed slide the cover over like shown below.

7) Now pull up the top.

8) Take out the 9 screws. Note that if you have a newer version PS3 the screws may be in different locations.

9) Take out this small metal piece, do not lose it! Note if you have a newer version PS3 this small metal piece will not be there.

10) Pull up the top of the PS3. If you have an older version PS3, read the next few steps before pulling the top up.

11) All older versions PS3's (w/ the flap in the front) will have a ribbon cable connected like shown in the picture below.

12) Gently pull up the tab.

13) Pull out the ribbon cable.

14) The top should now be completely removed.

15) Gently unplug the cable shown below.

16) Pull up the drive.

17) Gently push up the flap tab holding the ribbon cable.

18) Pull out the ribbon cable.

19) Remove the drive from the PS3.

20) Remove the 5 screws shown below on the bottom of the drive. Note that newer version PS3's may look slightly different during this step, but the concept is the exact same.

21) Pull up the front flap on the metal shield.

22) Now completely remove the metal shield.

23) Remove the 5 screws holding down the drive cover.

24) Remove the spindle.

25) Gently pull out this cable.

26) Remove the small sticker.

27) Pull off the drive cover and set aside.

28) Take out the 2 black screws holding down the drive board.

29) Remove the 4 ribbon cables. All are held in by tabs, so be sure to flip them up before removing the ribbon cables.

30) Pull out the drive board.

31) Pull off the metal shield.

32) Push up the tab holding the laser ribbon cable.

33) Pull out the ribbon cable.

34) Push up this tab.

35) Pull out the ribbon cable.

36) Gently pull up this ribbon cable. It is connected to the mech.

37) Remove the 4 screws holding down the mech.

38) Pull out the mech.

39) Grab your new mech, we're half way done.

40) Take off the small rubber screw pieces on the old mech and install them on your new mech.

41) Put the mech in place and plug in the ribbon cable shown below.

42) Screw back in the 4 screws. Make sure the mech is aligned correctly.

43) Plug back in the ribbon cable that connects to the laser.

44) Re-align the brown ribbon cable like shown below.

45) Put the metal piece back on. Make sure the ribbon cables do not get stuck under.

46) Put the drive board back on in place and plug back in the ribbon cables.

47) Put the 2 black screws back in to secure the drive board.

48) Put the drive top back on.

49) Put the spindle back on.

50) Put the 5 black screws back in.

51) Plug back in the cable shown below.

52) Put the metal shield back on.

53) Screw it down with the 3 black screws.

54) Put the rest of the screws in.

55) Plug the ribbon cable back in and secure it by pushing down the tab.

56) Plug back in the cable shown below. NOTE: It would be best to test your console now before putting everything back together.

57) Put the top back on. Note that there are some latches on the front that help you line up the top cover.

58) Plug back in the cable shown below & secure it by pushing down the tab. Newer version PS3's will not have this ribbon cable.

59) Put the metal piece back in place. Newer version PS3's will not have this piece.

60) Put the 9 screws back in.

61) Slide the top cover back on.

62) Put the screw back in.

63) Put the rubber piece back in and your finished!
