I'm writing this on an Athlon XP computer. What the hell happened to AMD?? My next gaming CPU is gonna be a new Intel Penryn. I hope AMD gets its act together. Intel as the only chip maker = bad.

Im an Intel person, and I see that AMD, is falling behind in technology. Intel made the Quad core about 2 years ago, the Xeons. AMD just barely released their 9 series. AMD are usually cheaper, but the brute power does not compare up to an Intel chip. Almost all the benchmark with 3DMark that are high, are Intel. And Intel isn't the only chip maker, IBM, is still out there. But of course its not for public, only servers and commercial usage. But those IBM cells are amazing.

you can't rely on benchmarks alone; hardware devs write instructions specifically to fare well on benchmark tests.. running on an AMD 64 X2 Dual 3600+ and I've yet to encounter a game I slug along on. The real issue is ATI vs. Nvidia and in that race Nvidia is CLEARLY a lap ahead.

what about the AMD Phenom chip, thats 4 chips in 1. I know this board is a litlte bit old, but I always rely on AMD and ATI. I had bad luck with Nvidia from the start back with the Geforce 2 cards.. never worked well with the systems I built, maybe I had to powerful of a system back then... but I need to make a new one now..

My sources tell me that the Core 2 Quad is the only one Intel makes better than AMD.

Thats just how technology works. AMD and Intel aren't getting together and saying "ok, next big thing is dual cores, GO!" They are constantly trying to outdo each other. Intel has been making expensive chips with more and more power. AMD hit the scene with affordable and powerful chips that ran a little hot. Then they came out with the 64 bit chips first and cornered the market there for a while. That turned out to not be the next big thing and now Intel has lept ahead with the dual cores.
A year or two down the road AMD might come out with something new and be at the head of the pack again.
