Anybody else here play this fantastic game?
If you've not played it I recommend reading the Saga of Boatmurdred. Google it, it's all over.
The basic games uses simple ascii for graphics and can be hard to understand, I recommend getting a modded version from Mayday.
This game is 100% free and in perpetual Alpha.

Ok a basic explenation is that you run a simulated dwarf fortress. You start out with 7 and they set out to carve out their own fort.
You can't control the dwarfs, only set up the jobs you want them to do. They'll eventually get around to it between eating, sleeping, and doing other dwarfish things.
The game is incredibly in depth. In combat they can get injured down to individual fingers or organs, they have moods that are affected by a wide variety of things such as the weather, the quality of their posessions and the actions of other dwarfs, dwarfs can be come irate or even go insane.
What really makes the game fun is the randomness involved. You can basically only dictate what you want to be done and everything else is completely out of your control. Dwarfs will ignore you, rivers will flood, goblins and dragons will attack. This is why I recommend reading the saga of boatmurdered, because it will give you a good idea of the random and often idiotic things your minions will get up to.

LOL, I tried to warn you the graphics were horrible. They are definitely not a selling point for this game.

Ah yes, DF. It is very addictive once you get a good spot to settle at. I try to see how long it takes until all of mine are killed off, and that's with preparing ahead of time. But with Vista it runs so slow... like the max i had was 10FPS with only the 7 dwarves.
Adventure mode is fun... you can kill people and animals with piles of vomit... or socks.

Thats terrible about the low speeds on Vista. I wonder why that is? I know the game can use a tremendous amount of processor but with just the 7 dwarfs? Thats ridiculous.
